Welcome
to
Malcolm Island
( Town of Sointula )
There are many diverse activities for an afternoon or a
week.
If you are walking, you might:
Turn left down First Street after you leave the ferry, and stroll
past the hotel toward the boat harbour. Stop in at the Sointula
Museum ( 11:00am-noon and 2:00pm - 3:00pm) for a sense of the
town's history as a Finnish commune nearly a century ago. Continue
past historic houses and marine ways. A dive shop and an art gallery,
until you reach the harbour ( Rough Bay ). There you can overlook
the fishing fleet. At low tides, Rough Bay is a wonderful location
for watching birds as part of the docks provide a platform over
tidal flats.
Other adventures if you have a car:
Check the map on the front of the Sointula Co-operative Store
( the oldest continuous co-op in Canada ) for a route to Bere
Point Campgrounds. Drive over logging roads to Bere Point to enjoy
beach walks, a nature trail, picnic sites, and beautiful camping
facilities. Bere Point is a rubbing beach sometimes frequented
by killer whales.
Drive out to explore Mitchell Bay, an idyllic
enclave at the end of Malcolm Island. You may like it so much
you book a night in one of the bed and breakfasts. On the way,
be sure to check out Big Lake!
If you choose to stay in the downtown area:
Enjoy a meal in one of the restaurants, shop for local art, collectibles,
or just souvenirs, and wander among the historic houses and public
buildings. There are a number of friendly, convenient bed and
breakfasts and cottages for a longer stay.
Other Activities:
Choices include a bicycle rentals ( a ride out to Kaleva Road
along the beach is a special treat ), and there are boat charters
available for fishing, tours, whale watching, as well as kayak
rentals. Charter a boat tour of the Pearse islands for a good
look at wild island scenery. Hike or dive along the logging roads
that wander across Malcolm Island, and stop for a picnic on a
deserted beach.
More than anything, Malcolm Island is about relaxing.
Come adjust to an island pace of life and feel a part of our community.
Slow down and stay a while!
