North Island estuaries also provide important habitat to several species of mammals including Cougar, Black Bear, Wolf, Roosevelt Elk, Black-tailed Deer, seals and sea lions, and in some cases whales.
Elk and Deer graze in estuarine grasslands and the associated upland habitat throughout the year. Before hibernation, Black Bears are frequently found in estuaries feeding on spawning salmon and berries.
