Dominant in many estuaries is a broad expanse of grass and forb meadows. These will not normally be inundated except at exceptionally high tides or during storms. However, most plant species in this area will be moderately salt tolerant to protect themselves from these occurrences.
The dominant species in such meadows will normally be tufted hairgrass.
This species may, in some estuaries, be so common that it forms almost a monoculture.
Other grasses may also occur in this zone, including red fescue and Alaska brome along with forbs such as red clover, rice root and silverweed. |
