Northern Ireland Features In RTE Tracks & Trails Series

Tracks & Trails is back for a 9th series on RTE 1 from Friday 28th May (7:30pm) kicking off with Northern Ireland in Episode 1 presented by country music singer Cliona Hagan exploring the Mourne Mountains and the Causeway Coast.

RTE 1, Friday 28th May at 7:30pm: Tracks & Trails Episode 1, The Mournes & Causeway Coast, Northern Ireland - Presented by Cliona Hagan.

The new series, which returns after a two year break is bursting with beautiful hikes, walks and cycles on newly developed and lesser travelled routes on the island of Ireland.

Working with the ROI Office on production, Tracks & Trails will bring the viewer across spectacular mountain and cliff side trails in Northern Ireland while meeting some wonderful guests along the way. This includes ultra-athlete and adventurer Hannah Shields, luthier George Lowden as well as Peter Rafferty from Walk the Mournes and Ruth Linton, a National Trust ranger.

Cliona Hagan discovered a love for hiking during 2020.  She realised having moved home to County Tyrone while planning to record a new album, how good walking is for her inspiration and overall well-being and now loves to get out and relax in nature.  Cliona took time out of recording this new album to spend two days walking in Northern Ireland.  She completes two substantial walks, both of which can be shortened or extended.

She said: "The Mourne Mountains and Causeway Coast are both only about 90 minutes away from where I live in Tyrone, yet I never took the opportunity to explore the beauty and scenery on my doorstep. I loved the raw and rugged coastline from Ballintoy to Portbradden and then the wilderness of the Mournes and the sheer vast landscape and options for hiking. I look forward to exploring more routes and counties in 2021"

The five episodes are aimed at the ever growing group of hikers and outdoor enthusiasts who are embracing the routes that Ireland has to offer.  There is also an emphasis on the health and well-being benefits associated with getting outside, in spending time in nature, how we can become calm and alert and how walking has been an inspiration for some of our guests in their work.

Every trail featured can be adapted in length and difficulty to suit all ages, which can be completed in a day or better still over a long weekend; providing inspiration to try places or routes not considered before which are closer than we think.

Look out for two further short documentaries from Tracks & Trails on our channels next week.
